Concrete construction and infrastructure development form the backbone of this positive growth. Highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, metro systems, and large-scale residential districts shape the face of modern Türkiye. Major projects such as Istanbul Airport, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, the Eurasia Tunnel, and the Çanakkale 1915 Bridge exemplify the sector’s technical capabilities and the extensive use of complex concrete and structural solutions. Many of these projects are realized through public-private partnership (PPP) or build-operate-transfer (BOT) models, which integrate construction, financing, and operation over the long term.

In addition to transport infrastructure, housing construction plays a central role. The state housing agency TOKİ is one of the key players, driving large-scale programs in social housing and urban redevelopment. Since its establishment, around 1.5 million housing units have been built, complemented by public buildings such as schools, hospitals, and administrative facilities. The high demand for housing particularly promotes industrialized construction methods, precast systems, and cost-efficient building structures made of AAC.

Focus on sustainability and decarbonization

 

With the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2053, the decarbonization of the construction and building materials industry is becoming increasingly important. Energy-intensive sectors in particular, such as cement and concrete production, are under pressure to adapt. European regulations such as the Green Deal and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) are accelerating investments in low-CO₂ cements, alternative binders, and energy-efficient production processes. As a result, sustainable construction using autoclaved aerated concrete is evolving from a legal requirement to a strategic competitive factor – a development that can also be observed in Türkiye.

Earthquake safety as a structural guiding principle in concrete construction

 

Due to its location along several active tectonic fault lines, Türkiye is among the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. Accordingly, improving the earthquake resilience of buildings and infrastructure is a key priority in construction policy. Following the severe earthquakes in February 2023, reconstruction efforts in the affected regions have gained significant momentum. The focus is on earthquake-resistant structural concepts, reinforced concrete and AAC structures, and modern safety standards.
